Chapter 1: The First Transmission
The device felt warm against my temple, like a cup of tea. I pressed the button and closed my eyes. At first, nothing. Then — a taste. Copper and rain. My neighbor's grief, broadcasting through the network I'd built in her apartment across the hall. She'd lost her mother that morning. I had no words for it. But I had her sorrow, perfectly, as if it were my own.That's when I understood: EmotionNet didn't solve loneliness. It made you responsible for everything you touched.
Chapter 2: Signal Loss
When the grid went down in the tri-state area, we didn't know it was EmotionNet until people started calling each other. Not texting. Calling. Actually using their mouths. "We need to hear your voice," my sister said. "We need to feel what you feel." "I don't know what I feel," I said. Chapter 3: Calibration
The engineers who designed EmotionNet called it "calibration." A way to normalize emotional signals — reduce the noise, amplify the signal. What they didn't say was that calibration is always a form of control. The most efficient emotions were joy, excitement, calm. The system naturally favored these states because they transmitted cleanly. Sadness and anger were noisy, fragmented, difficult to decode.
